Man drowns trying to swim across yarra estuary to be saved by shark in Indonesia

A huge shark was found dead with the legs tied off while attempting to swim across the Great Barrier Reef, according to reports, and an investigation is underway.

The incident occurred at the foot of Apeldoorn Strait, where the Great Barrier Reef sits, and was not unusual.

A group of divers have had to climb up over rocks to rescue the shark from the waters below.

At this stage they have been unable to save it, the Associated Press reported, but divers from the Australian Shark Attack File, the group responsible for monitoring the Great Barrier Reef, have confirmed the death.

"The shark was found dead. It wasn't a typical swimming dead or being dismembered by a large fish, there was no dismembered limbs," said Dr Ian Robertson, marine mammal research manager with the ASPF.

"The shark seemed to be a male and was found dead by divers earlier today."

According to reports, the shark was in good health and was still alive when divers climbed up to rescue it.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
