Missing bondi swimmer found safe on dry land in Queensland

  Updated

A man has been rescued after he was found floating on dry land in Queensland after being thrown from his boat.

About 4:00pm, the man was found by a family who were out swimming at The Great Barrier Reef National Park, near Townsville.

An ABC News analysis shows the man, who is aged in his 30s, is from Queensland but has lived in Australia for 15 years.

He is likely to have been in the water for between five and 12 days.

The ABC has not been able to verify his identity, but local fisherman are trying to locate him.

He is expected to be taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"His body is badly decomposed," one of his cousins, the brother of the man, said.

"He didn't have a pulse, no blood pressure so they're trying to give him some basic life support and try to keep him alive until the ambulance gets there," he said.

"All they can say now is that he was thrown overboard or caught in heavy surf that was just hitting him in the stomach."

Another brother of the victim, another named as Robert, said the couple did not know the man's name or face but had contacted him on Facebook and contacted police.

"What he had done for 20 years is to have done something, you know, that would have to be done some other way," the brother said.

ABC News Australia's reporter Ben Lewis says there were only two options for rescue.

"We've been trying for some time, as a team, to find someone that we could go and get hold of, and obviously that will be someone that was in rough seas, like some of the younger guys who have been out," he said.

"That would have been <if> he was washed overboard as the fishermen call it."

But the brother of the man is adamant the man knew the man and was trying to save him.

"He tried," Mr Robert told ABC News Australia.

"We all went out and spent the whole night trying to find him and when we eventually found him we found him to be a much happier person."

The man is in a critical condition in hospital but is believed to have survived.
