Yasi bushfires wreak havoc but lifes still good in the bush

by Kevin Gootman, NSW Press Council (June 14, 2016)

Updated June 17, 2016 at 2.05pm

The world's second-smallest treehouse will be one of several structures in Sydney's New South Wales capital that will get a makeover next year under a pilot program aiming to save lives.

The Sydney Forest and Bird Trust, which administers the program, says it will see the "biggest and most complex and long-lasting treehouse" project in the country, which will be installed over three years in the capital's North Shore on the site of the old South Yarra Valley Forest park.

Construction for the new treehouse, which will have room for two people for three days, will begin in 2016.

There will also be a temporary park in its place, where the treehouse will go, with a park and garden.

Calls to the government has not yet been answered.

NSW Premier Mike Baird says a project of this size and scale was "unimaginable" with the loss of thousands of hectares of forest in the area.

He says the treehouse is expected to cost $75 million and build in "five to six years".

"We are going to build it in a way that really is not only environmentally sustainable, but I want to note that you don't even need to live here to enjoy the trees," Mr Baird said.

The $55 million park is due to open this year.

"While these are really exciting projects - these are not really big changes to the bush, but they do add to the diversity of habitat being lost," Mr Baird said.

The $50 million park will also include a large garden and play areas for the park's 1,500 wildflowers and a range of aquatic and forest habitat, including bird habitat.

The treehouse was first proposed in 2008 in the North Shore, but this was cancelled after the council said it could not provide enough funding from private donors.

The Trust said it hoped the new treehouse would allow trees to get out of the bush, as they were known to build shelter where they died when they were burnt.

Research calls for abolishing income tax deduction and reducing corporate tax rates. It says that if tax reform is passed, tax deductions should be eliminated entirely, tax rates should be reduced, and the estate tax should not be levied on the wealthiest people.

The plan says Congress should also cut the corporate tax rate to 25% and eliminate the estate tax. In the proposal's analysis of the fiscal costs of those changes, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that, as a whole, the proposed tax cuts would reduce federal revenues by $1 trillion, which would create a fiscal deficit of about $5.1 trillion over 10 years.

President Trump says the GOP tax overhaul can be paid for by eliminating deductions for state and local taxes, cutting the corporate tax rate to 15%, and repealing some tax deductions such as state and local sales taxes.

In November, the President told the Washington Post that the tax reform plan would increase the economic output of the United States, creating jobs that would allow the U.S. to compete on the world stage.

Missing bondi swimmer found safe on dry land in Queensland

Updated

A man has been rescued after he was found floating on dry land in Queensland after being thrown from his boat.

About 4:00pm, the man was found by a family who were out swimming at The Great Barrier Reef National Park, near Townsville.

An ABC News analysis shows the man, who is aged in his 30s, is from Queensland but has lived in Australia for 15 years.

He is likely to have been in the water for between five and 12 days.

The ABC has not been able to verify his identity, but local fisherman are trying to locate him.

He is expected to be taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"His body is badly decomposed," one of his cousins, the brother of the man, said.

"He didn't have a pulse, no blood pressure so they're trying to give him some basic life support and try to keep him alive until the ambulance gets there," he said.

"All they can say now is that he was thrown overboard or caught in heavy surf that was just hitting him in the stomach."

Another brother of the victim, another named as Robert, said the couple did not know the man's name or face but had contacted him on Facebook and contacted police.

"What he had done for 20 years is to have done something, you know, that would have to be done some other way," the brother said.

ABC News Australia's reporter Ben Lewis says there were only two options for rescue.

"We've been trying for some time, as a team, to find someone that we could go and get hold of, and obviously that will be someone that was in rough seas, like some of the younger guys who have been out," he said.

"That would have been <if> he was washed overboard as the fishermen call it."

But the brother of the man is adamant the man knew the man and was trying to save him.

"He tried," Mr Robert told ABC News Australia.

"We all went out and spent the whole night trying to find him and when we eventually found him we found him to be a much happier person."

The man is in a critical condition in hospital but is believed to have survived.

Mcewen rejects sold out claim that he will go public with emails.

Citing the lack of the latest email and internal documents for the new year, Leopold said: "I have no plans at the moment to discuss anything that is not publicly released, which is why we haven't released the documents yet."

Earlier today, MailOnline reported that a major newspaper that had written extensively about the email controversy earlier this week said it was no longer publishing anything about the email issue as they feared it would damage it.

On Thursday, the Mail reported that it had received an email from a MailOnline journalist who claimed that she had been contacted by the newspaper's managing editor about what it considered a 'grievance' over her coverage of the email revelations.

"The issue of whether he should go public or not is in his hands," the journalist's email said. "He won't, as he isn't allowed to do that yet."

The Mail Online journalist did not respond to requests for comment.

On Friday, Leopold insisted that the editor would be happy to go public with any emails in their possession in order to put a "cover over" the email story. "If he wants to go public, the editor is willing to explain anything for the story he has been writing about for several years," Leopold told BBC News.

In his BBC interview, Leopold said the newspaper had not disclosed the names of sources but he did acknowledge some documents have been removed from their servers and "we have tried very hard to maintain the confidence of everyone that they don't have any internal emails of his".

However, he added that there was still an issue of confidentiality – a very important point for the publication given his background as the head of the German magazine DERK.

"To try to hide the documents and not put that information out would obviously be very problematic," said Leopold.

However, Leopold refused to rule out that he might take any legal action in order to protect the integrity of the publication and ensure a full investigation. He said his editors have been given the advice to not comment "until we find out what's in the emails".

Leopold said he was looking forward to a discussion with the newspaper about the emails which are expected to have been sent by Clinton during the time she was the Secretary of State. He said there was a strong possibility they are not the latest email.

"I can't rule out that some of them are not the emails of Clinton, because there are emails that are from a month or more ago," he told BBC News.

Leopold also rejected claims that it is time to put the allegations about email and the investigation of th

Possible debris field spotted in search for mh370 flight MH370, Chinese plane flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing (Xinhua)

"The search area is about 20,000 square kilometers. It's being expanded," she said.

Search efforts should resume within three days.

The United States and Malaysia are involved in an interagency search of the sea between two of Asia's busiest shipping routes as they search for aircraft that disappeared from military radar while flying through airspace over the South China Sea.

The search for MH370 has cost more than 1.5 billion dollars.

The search resumed following the March 9 disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 in a southern corridor of the Southern Ocean off the coast of western Australia.

Hockeyroos too good for japan", "It can't be real until we get them".

I had my share of issues with the games, but the thing that always made me sad was that these weren't just any old teams - these were really great hockey teams. That's not saying these teams aren't really good, you can really argue their style is better than any other team's, but I do think the reason they didn't really become a huge force in the NHL or something, was that they weren't really competitive.

I would have loved for them to be able to compete with some of the younger teams in the league, and just let them get on with it, and have fun. What's a kid that gets into playing one sport, and it sounds like they were just going to leave the other two behind?

No, it's just a different experience. A lot of guys that have been drafted in the fourth round or the fifth round of the draft have played in the NHL. It's probably more their second or third time around, and so they know what the game is about and all, and that doesn't really change much from an NHL perspective or a team perspective. It's the same idea. They understand it, but I don't think they'd ever say, "Hey I'm playing hockey, I know I'm good, I know it's NHL". I guess they're probably going to say, "Well it's another sport." But not quite. I never got asked that question, and so people always start looking at it and going, "Well if you were in our league you'd know you're good." It's really the way of life sometimes, but maybe it's more the way of life of the world now than in the past.

I think hockey is a tough game, and there are players that can't get enough of it and a lot of players that have a harder job than it looks. The younger guys on all these teams, that's kind of an example, it's not that I was looking forward to it, but it's what it was, and I kind of felt like I was in the middle of a team, we were all trying to get by as a team, and we all really wanted to be here, but I don't know if I ever really had the respect I did as a leader on the team to feel that way and kind of feel like I needed to say something. I was happy doing what I was doing, and maybe not the best person at it, but I wasn't one who was complaining about the game, I didn't want to be on the ice or in the media all day all the time telling people what I thought or not, or what wasn't true about the game.
